She was born July 3, 1904 in Smyrna, the daughter of George and Eve Bignell of Belding. Mary married Ralph Pellett in Detroit on September 25, 1936. After graduating from teachers college she taught school in Detroit and then, when she and Ralph moved to McBride, Mary continued to each elementary grades there. In 1973 they both retired and moved to the lower Rio Grande Valley. They lived together for 18 years in Edinburg until Ralph died in February 1991. Mary then lived by herself in their mobile home until 1998 when she moved to Brookridge Retirement Center, Pharr, Texas. Mary’s great loves were cats and dogs, mineral collecting, growing roses, crocheting afghan blankets and writing poetry. She always had several cats of her own while living in Edinburg and fed many passing strays. Mary and Ralph shared the hobby of mineral and rock collecting and spent many happy times hunting for them in the Valley and elsewhere. Ralph did extensive lapidary work with some of the material that they collected. They were active members of the Magic Valley Gem and Mineral Society, in which Mary had several offices during her 30 years as a life member. She was still going on collecting trips at the age of 93 and would have continued longer had her eyesight not failed. Mary was a member of First United Methodist Church, Edinburg, and was active in her church circle. She participated in the local Rebekah Lodge until her last few years. Wherever Mary lived she had a flower garden, with roses being her favorite. At some time, each of Mary’s relatives received an afghan crocheted by her. Mary had no children, but she is survived by four nieces, a nephew, many grand- nieces and grand-nephews and many friends. Two of her nieces, when they were young girls, enjoyed accompanying Mary and Ralph on collecting trips and this led them both to careers in geology. Graveside services at 11 a.m. Tuesday at McBride Cemetery, with Pastor Connie Bongard officiating. Arrangements are by Stebbins-McCullough Chapel, Edmore.
