Born in Saginaw on July 25,1956, son of Guadalupe R.Pena & Sarah Angelica Pena. Graduated from Saginaw High School & went to work at General Motors. Enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, 1979 to 1982. On July 17, 1982, he married Pamela Joyce Harding in Vista,Calif. Joel had a long & dedicated civilian careen in General Motors-would take an assignment anywhere they sent him. He worked in Saginaw at the Foundry, Lordstown, Ohio, Grand Rapids & Coopersville. He worked as a Shakeout, a Sewing Specialist & retired at 49 as a Die Rigger. He would share stories with his best friend,Kirk Blasius. Following his time in the Marine Corps, he enlisted in the Michigan Army National Guards, retiring after 21 years & 6 months. During the time in the National Guards, he was activated & served in Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm from November 1990 & released for return in June of 1991. After Military retirement, he served multiple terms as Commander of the Veterans of a Foreign War;Post 4406 Belding, holding that role form 2010-2014-16 & 2021- 2022.Also served as Honor Guard for Veterans at funeral services for 15 years. His legacy is one of sacrifice, dedication, integrity, enduring love & laughter, duty to his country, family & friends. Survived by his wife, Pamela Pena; children:Larry (Lisa) Pena of Freeport, Stacy (David) Corbin of Temple, TX, Lisa (Gabriella) Pena of Traverse City, Michael (Irina)Pena of Belding, & Leslie (Jason) Longo of Rockford; grandchildren: Ashton Green, Joel Lake, Matthew Guinther, Mackenzie Bennett, Cody Corbin, Gabriel Pena, Jacob Corbin, Raquel Pena, Taylor Pena, Carmine Pena, Grayson Longo & Lennon Longo, great-grandchildren:Camron Green, Colter Green, Kinson Bennett & Maise Bennett: Mother, Sarah A Pena of Saginaw, three sisters & one brother;Raquel Rico of Saginaw, Miriam (Vincent) Cieluch of Arvada, Colo, Michael (Margaret) Pena of Saginaw; & Rosemary (Brian Trybulski)Pena of Saginaw & many nieces, nephews, extended family & dear friends. Preceded in death by his father, Gusdalupe R. Pena & sister, Sylvia Pena Cantu. Funeral services, with Military Honors will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, March 5, 2026 at Johnson-Feuerstein Funeral Home, Belding. Visitation will be Wednesday, March 4 from 4 to 7 p.m. Burial will be at Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Friday, March 6, 2026 at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that you consider contributing to, supporting & participating in your local VFW-as serving & championing that organization was Joel's passion.
