Penny was born Nov. 22, 1821, in Lithe Westmoreland, England. His father died when he was quite young and he was left to his own resources. He came to Orleans county, New York in 1839. He married to Hannah Brazee in 1844. Six children were born to this union, three sons and three daughters, one daughter dying in infancy. They afterward adopted a daughter, now Mrs. Harvey D. Dye. His wife, Hannah Penny, died August 19, 1878. The children are Mortimer Penny of Washington; (Mrs. Mary Wright who died in 1893); Mrs. Robert Hall of Shiloh; Benore Penny of Portland, Mich., and Wm. H. Penny of Big Fork, Mont. He came to Ronald and settled on section 6 in 1853 which has ever since been his home with the exception of about eight years. His home has been tenderly cared for by his daughter, Mrs. Robert Hall, and husband. He has been a great sufferer for the past five years with eczema and rheumatism but being cheerful and kind in disposition. He realized his end was near and was ready to go. He has seen this country grow from a barren wilderness into splendid homes. He leaves ten grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and one great-great- grandchild. The funeral sermon was preached by Rev. E. E. Branch, of Ionia, and Mr. and Mrs. George Thayer and daughter furnished the music. There were beautiful flowers in profusion and a fair sized audience owing to the terrible storm. Funeral at Woodard lake church and he was laid to rest by the side of his wife and daughter gone before, on family lot. He was aged 90 years, 1 month and 7 days.
