Perham, 78, occurred Sunday evening, September 20, at 8:15 at the home of Mrs. Zena Marsh, West Lincoln avenue. Mrs. Perham had been ill for a long time. Mrs. Perham was born April 16, 1858 on the farm “Chipmunk Knoll” which is west of Orange. She was the daughter of Benjamin and Esther Bartlett who were early settlers of Ionia having come here from New York state. Her parents moved to Ionia when she was about eight years old. She has lived at her home on Lafayette street for about 70 years. When she was 16 she started teaching school in the Algodon school in Lake Odessa township. She married Clifton H. Perham September 9, 1882, which was his birthday. Her husband, who was a bridge contractor, was accidentally killed in 1904 while he was working on a bridge in New York state. Mrs. Perham was active in club and social organizations of Ionia. She belonged to the Eastern Star and was secretary for 25 years, the White Shrine of which she served as secretary and treasurer for several years and received the degree of chivalry, the women’s relief corps of which she was secretary, and the DAR of which she served as secretary for a two-year term. She was also active in the Church of Christ to which she had belonged all her life. She was recording secretary of the church for a number of years, held various other offices and was a Sunday school teacher. She belonged to the Past Noble grands club of the Rebekah lodge and the Bro-Lad club of the Eastern Star. She is survived by several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon, September 23, at 2 o’clock at the Church of Christ with Rev. Paul Stewart officiating. Interment will be in Highland Park cemetery. The body has been taken to Stone’s funeral home where it will remain until 10 o’clock Wednesday morning when it will be taken to the church.
