Having a frail constitution and poor health, it soon became evident to him that he could not endure the close confinement necessary to success in this branch of business, and forming a partnership with Mr. Chauncey Barnes, he left the management of the store to him, while he traveled for the Bradstreet & Son Commercial Agency of Detroit. His health temporarily improving with out door exercise incident to traveling, and being advised that he must not confine himself in the store, he took advantage of an opportunity offered him to go to Colorado or California in the employ of the agency, where it was thought the climate would better agree with him. He therefore disposed of his interest in the store to Kelsey Bros., of Corunna, and went to Omaha, taking charge of a branch office of the Agency in that city, his family in the meantime remaining here. For a short time after his arrival in Omaha his health improved, and the fond hopes of his family and friends for his complete restoration seemed about to be realized. But, alas, these hopes were soon crushed, for soon the intelligence came this his cough had commenced with renewed violence, and that he was nearly prostrated. Becoming satisfied that the fierce winds of that country were detrimental to his health, he resigned his position and returned to his family in this city, much worse than when he left, where he has been confined to the house most of the time until his death, in a slow but sure decline. It was my pleasure to be an inmate of his family a short time, since his residence here, and I wish it were in my power to pay him the tribute his merit deserved. For when a pure and exemplary man dies, one whose private life is above reproach and an example to all; it is a great loss to community, and a few lines of remembrance are but simple justice. As a father he was kind, loving and generous, setting the purest example before his children, and inculcating in their minds those principles that would not only lead them in to a higher order of being, but make them useful members of society. As the head of a family he was ever the courteous, christian gentleman, kind, genial and hospitable As a friend he was all that could be desired, forming strong attachments, and all of his actions being squared by the golden rule. You always felt that his friendship was pure and unselfish. As a man he possessed a strong, clear mind, an indomitable will and an unconquerable perseverance, which, with a strong physical organism, would have placed him among the foremost business men of the State, as he was in intelligence.
