Maurice was part of the “Greatest Generation” that fought in WWII, enlisting at age 20 in the U.S, Army Air Corp in August of 1942. He attended flight school, aerial gunnery school, and electronic specialist school. He was subsequently assigned as a waist gunner on B-29’s to the 483re Bomb Squadron, 505th Bomb Group and served in Tinian Island in the South Pacific until his discharge in November 1945, having attained the rank of Staff Sergeant. When he returned to civilian life, Maurice attended Ford Trade School and was employed as a Tool & Die Maker, eventually becoming the owner of Belding Tool & Machine Corporation in Belding. Maurice enjoyed fishing, golf and camping at Traverse City with many trips with Betty to Las Vegas. Maurice is survived by his children, Ronald (Cindy) Petersen of Comstock Park, Jane (Owen) Moore of Ionia, Jack Petersen of Belding and Michael (Amy) Petersen of Ionia; 9 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Betty Lois (Almy) Petersen, on April 24, 2005. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, May 8, at Johnson- Feuerstein Funeral Home, 203 S. Pleasant Street in Belding, with Pastor Kenneth Harger officiating. Interment will be in Rest Haven memorial Gardens. Visitation will be on Thursday, May 7, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Humane Society of Ionia or Kent County, the Alvah N. Belding Library or a charity of one’s choice.
