County News - Thursday, November 12, 1936 INQUEST VERDICTS GIVEN; MAN, FINED IN PETERSON DEATH Al Reiger Fined $50 In Justice Court; Phillips Awaits Decision Two juries were summoned by Coroner Harry Myers Friday to hold inquests into the two deaths resulting from traffic accidents a week ago Sunday on M-21. The Jury returned a verdict in the case in which Ezra Peterson, 51, Ionia, was killed, that Al Reiger, 34, driver of the car in which Peterson was a passenger, was intoxicated. Reiger's car struck the rear of an auto driven by Arthur Wooters, on M-21 west of the Ionia city limits. Peterson suffered a fractured skull and died in the Ionia Hospital. Another jury was called to probe the accident on the same highway which brought instant death to Leo Bartlett, 21, Berlin township farm youth, when Bartlett's machine was struck by a car driven by Henry Phillips, 25, Grand Rapids. The jury returned a verdict holding that Phillips was guilty of reckless driving. Al Reiger was arraigned before Justice of Peace Donald Steele here Tuesday for a hearing after earlier making a plea of not guilty, demanding examination to the charge of driving while under the influence of liquor. Reiger changed his plea Tuesday to guilty and was fined $50 and $5.65 costs. He paid and was released. He had been free under a $200 bond. Prosecuting Attorney George Nichols has not as yet issued a warrant for Phillip's arrest, stating that he had not decided what action would be taken. He ordered the sheriff's officers to allow the youth to return to his home after the inquest Friday.
