Slowins Death came to Miss Ella Jane Petoskey at the Emmet County Medical Care Facility October 17, 1972 at the age of 92. She had spent the most of the summer and fall at the Lockwood-McDonald Hospital in Petoskey. Had she had her choice, she would have died at her cabin in the woods when she could no longer make it on her own. Burial was in Friendship Township Cemetery about ten miles north of Harbor Springs. Miss Petoskey attended the Carlisle Indian School in Pennsylvania and later had taught there. She taught school on several western Indian reservations. She played the Minnehaha lead in the Hiawatha play at Petoskey. The play was sponsored by the railroad to entertain the thousands of excursionists in the early 1900s. She was the granddaughter of Chief Ignatius Petoskey, who once owned the land on which the city of Petoskey is situated.
