Borden post of the G. A. R., died Sunday at the home of his son, George Pettingill, 432 Price Street, after an illness of but a few hours. The old veteran had roomed downtown, preferring to live alone during his declining years. He was taken ill in his room and his son was notified. He at once had his father removed to his home, where death soon followed as a result of a heart ailment resulting from his advanced years. He was one of the few “boy” volunteers of the Civil war left in this vicinity. He enlisted in Company E., 1st Michigan Engineers, on September 24, 1863, when he was not yet 16 years of age. He was discharged at the end of service, September 22, 1865. He had lived in Michigan since he came here from New York State, where he was born June 12, 1847. For many years he was a resident here and during his younger days was famed locally as a stone mason. Most of the downtown buildings of the city rest on stone walls he helped to lay or laid alone. He is survived by his son George and a son, William of Ionia, a son, Burt, whose residence now is in the west, and a daughter, Addie, now residing in an Atlantic coast state.
