Dec. 9, 1925 JOHN PFEIFFER DIES Oldest Man in Ionia County, Died Monday, November 30th (First line is unreadable) o’clock, the grim reaper gathered in John Pfeiffer of Lyons who was nearing the century mark, and thus a life nearly 80 years of which has been spent in Lyons. Mr. Pfeiffer had been suffering the infirmities of advanced years for some time, and had grown very weak in the past few months, although he had been able to sit up until the last couple of days. Mr. Pfeiffer was born in Germany December 26, 1826, landing in Westphalia where he stayed with an uncle until sailing. Desiring to learn a trade he decided to go to Detroit and learn the shoemaking trade, so he left Westphalia for Detroit on foot with a loaf of bread, a piece of sausage and fifteen cents in his pocket. Near the end of the first day he met with a man near where Pontiac is now situated, and was told he had better stay there all night as it was eight miles to the next house. He made Detroit the next day and his first night was spent in a hotel, for which accommodation he paid five cents. He remained in that city for a year, and then came back to Westphalia where he had homesteaded 40 acres. This he sold in about two years and came to Lyons 80 years ago, where he has since resided. He worked at his trade with W.H. Cole for a time and then entered the saloon business for a period of seventeen years, later doing some farming.
