Walter L. Phelps, 75, of Ionia died Wednesday, May 2, 1994 at Blodgett Hospital
in Grand Rapids.  He was born June 29, 1918 in Ionia the son of Lee W. and Irene
(Stout) Phelps.  He was a lifetime Ionia resident.  He married Naomi Popendick
on January 27, 1941 in Wauseon, Ohio.  He was employed at Berger Motor Sales as
sales manager for 26 years, retiring in 1975.  He was a member of the First
Presbyterian Church, Ionia.

He is survived by his wife Naomi; one son, Terry Phelps of Fenwick; one
daughter, Kay Sparling of Gilroy, Calif.; three grandsons; two brothers,
Lawrence Phelps of Hastings, and Vern Phelps of Grand Rapids; one sister, Maxine
Hefflebower of Ionia; and several nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death
by his parents and one brother, Frank.

Visitation will be at the Rich Street Chapel from 10 to 11 a.m. on Saturday. 
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Cook Funeral Home with
the Rev. Robert Nixon officiating.  Burial will be in the Balcom Cemetery. 
Memorials can be made to the choice of the family, envelopes are available at
the Cook Funeral Home.
