Phelps, 72, died Thursday morning, April 14, at her home, 152 East Washington St. of coronary thrombosis after a few hours illness. Mrs. Phelps was born in Iona, June 27, 1877, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alonzo Freeman. She attended Ionia high school and on September 26, 1905 was married to George M. Phelps. Mr. Phelps died in 1924. With the exception of a few years when she lived in Pewamo, Ionia had been her home. She was a member of the First Baptist Church and was active in music circles in the city. she served as county treasurer, and with her sister, Mrs. Edna Smith, operated the dining room of the Reed Hotel, and up to the time of her death they operated The Manor on East Washington St. She is survived by the sister, Mrs. Smith, a brother, Glenn Freeman of Lansing, and a niece Mrs. Virginia Rawlings of Traverse City. Rev. J. Lee Lewis will officiate at the funeral service which will be from Stone-Kauffman Funeral Home at two o’clock Monday afternoon, April 18. Burial in Highland Park Cemetery.
