Word was received from Ann Arbor Saturday morning, telling of the death of George Morris Phelps, which occurred at an early hour Saturday. Though his death had been expected for number of weeks his hosts of friends and relatives had been anxiously watching and hoping that his life might be spared. His death followed the third operation which had been performed in about four years. Mr. Phelps was connected in the grocery business with his father, the late George F. Phelps. After the death of his father, Mr. Phelps conducted the business alone for some years. After disposing of the grocery stock Mr. and Mrs. Phelps moved to the eastern part of the state, where he worked as a traveling salesman. About three years ago Mr. Phelps was take very ill, and was taken to Ann Arbor, where he underwent a serious cranial operation. Since that time the family have made their home in Ionia, and Mr. Phelps has been connected with several business offices in the city. Mr. Phelps attended the Ionia schools and spent his boyhood days in the city. He was united in marriage to Miss Pearl Freeman, and as well as being one of the most active workers of the Presbyterian church, he was also active in the fraternal organizations of the city. Mr. Phelps was a past eminent commander of Ionia Commandery No. 11, Knights Templar, and was also active in the blue lodge, R.A.M., and council of the Masonic orders. Besides his connection with the Masonic fraternity, he was a member of the K. of P., and was a past chancellor of this order. Mr. Phelps is survived by his widow, Mrs. Pearl Phelps, and one brother, William Phelps of Detroit. The funeral party was expected to arrive in Ionia from Ann Arbor late Saturday evening.
