John William Phillips of 651 West Washington street was struck as he apparently crossed Dexter street just south of Washington about 11:55 p.m. according to Ionia city officers. Phillips was struck in the southbound lane by the car of Bruce D. Gibson, 30, of Wyoming. Gibson told officers he was southbound on the roadway and first saw Phillips in the path of his car as he approached Washington street. A passenger, Ronald F__nn, 26, of 215 High street agreed with Gibson, officers said. The city police cruiser was near the corner and both police officers reported hearing the screech of times but were unable to see the actual accident. Phillips was taken to the hospital by ambulance with a compound fracture of the left leg, scalp and right thigh laceration, contusions, abrasions, and possible internal injuries. He died at 10:16 a.m. Friday. Officers reported Gibson was cited for failure to have a driver’s license in his person but said investigation of the accident would continue. ------------ John William Phillips, 72, of 651 West Washington, died at Ionia County Memorial hospital early Friday morning from injuries sustained when he was struck by an automobile Thursday evening. Born in Sand Lake, December 4, 1894 he was the son of John and Martha Phillips. He attended school in Sand Lake and after school farmed and then went to work in Grand Rapids. He was married to Hulda Youngquist in Muskegon Heights, December 31, 1917 and would have celebrated the golden wedding anniversary this December. They made their home in Muskegon Heights five years, then moved to Grand Rapids where he was employed and lived 17 years. They came to Ionia in 1937 and he was employed at Grand Valley Packing two years and Ypsilanti Reed Furniture Co five years and in 1945 worked for Ivan Clark Manufacturing Co in Lyons until retirement in 1960. He was a World War I veteran having served with the 339th infantry, the famed polar bear unit, serving in Russia. He was a member of American Legion Gerard-Horrocks post, Mitchell-Bentley post VFW, Lesky-Dulek chapter, 29, disabled American veterans and also Ionia Lodge BPOE. He is survived by his wife Hulda; one son Peter of Crystal Lake, Ill., one daughter Mrs. Lawrence Russell of Ionia; one sister, Mrs. Mary Lawrence of Lombard, Ill.; seven grandchildren and one great grandchild. Funeral services will be at Boynton funeral home Monday at 11 a.m. with Rev. Lester C. Bailey officiating. Interment will be in Tuttle cemetery. Family will be at the funeral home Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon and evening.
