A. Swain was hastily summoned to hold an inquest over the remains of Walter S. Phillips, who had committed suicide by cutting his throat with a butcher knife. Mr. Phillips has been in poor health and for the past few weeks has been worse than usual and it is supposed that he committed the act while in a deranged condition of mind. Mrs. Phillips went to the barn to assist the hired man to put up some wheat he was about to sow and when she came into the house found that Mr. Phillips was not lying on the lounge where he usually did, and where he was when she went out; and after calling him several times and getting no response sought for him through the house, at last finding him in a small closet with his throat cut and unconscious. Some of the neighbors that were passing were called in and others sent for, but all that could be done was to prepare the body for burial and comfort the bereaved wife and quiet her nervous system which had received such a severe shock.
