Donnelly. Nearly all the members of the 21st infantry Vola., will remember old "Johnny Switzer" as he was called in reference to his nationality, whose fight with the chaplain at Mill Creek is among the most glorious annals of that organization and whose unbounded delight and enthusiasm on occasions of regimental re-unions made him a central figure and added to the pleasure of all the participants. Poor John has gone the way of all flesh and when the re-union shall take place on the other shore, those of his comrades who shall return as good an account for fidelity to their trust and for cheerfulness in misfortune, will have no cause to be ashamed of the record. Although he was not "gifted" in mental powers, and in his old age was the victim of the most despicable treachery, deceit and fraud, whereby he was deprived of the careful savings of his years in the service and lame and helpless without home or kindred, thrown upon the "cold charity of the world," his cheerfulness never deserted him, and we believe he was happier than many upon whom fortune has showered her favors of gold and honors, but has also laden with cares, responsibilities, jealousies and strifes. Verily his life has not been without its compensations, neither without its lessons for those wiser than he.
