The Ionia Daily Sentinel, Sunday, October 27, 1913

Clinton Pickard, aged 24, was instantly killed and Chas. Campbell and A. 
Seymour narrowly escaped serious injury Saturday night, when a Ford runabout 
in which they were returning from the west turned turtle, a mile and a half 
west of the county farm on the river road Saturday evening about 8:30.

Campbell, whose father lives in Sebewa and owns the machine, was driving and 
Pickard was sitting on Seymour’s lap in the other seat.  The night was foggy 
and it is believed that when they came to a jog in the road on the big hill 
instead of turning with the road they went straight ahead toward the ditch.  
When Campbell discovered he was out of the road he made an effort to turn in 
again when the machine went over.

Pickard was caught between the steering gear, the back of the seat and the 
ground and his neck broken.  Death was instantaneous.  Coroner Boynton was 
called from here and went at once but no inquest was held until this afternoon.

Pickard lived on South Dexter street where he has a wife and an eight-month-
old baby.  He was a foreman in the Hayes-Ionia factory.  C. Campbell lives on 
Yeomans street and Seymour on Adams street.  Both were unmarried.

The remains were brought at once to Ionia and taken to Bradley’s undertaking 
rooms.  The inquest to be held in the case of the death of Clinton Pickard was 
adjourned this afternoon till Friday.  The father whose home is at Belding but 
who is a canvasser and is being sought and the time of the funeral will not be 
definitely set till later.
