He had been vacationing at the oval in a house trailer with his family. The Associated Press reported Robert Pickens, 12, and Mary Lee, 14, were playing in the water on a rubber raft when they apparently ran into difficulties and Pickens went to their aid. The water was reported to be rough at that point with waves about three feet high. Lifeguards Bill Boonstra and Clint Boyce, who were just coming on duty were called by Dick Manhart who could see Pickens was in difficultly. Grand Haven firemen tried to revive Pickens who was washed ashore immediately but were not successful. Dr. Wm. Herd, Ottawa county medical examiner said Pickens died of accidental drowning. Pickens who is 42 years of age, lived with his family on Bellamy road and was a timekeeper at the Ionia Manufacturing Co. He is survived by his wife Emma and five children, Betty Lou, Terry, Mary Lee, Robert and Linda. Mrs. Pickens is the former Emma Christensen, daughter of Mr and Mrs Nels Christensen.
