June 20, 1907 BEAUTIFUL YOUNG LIFE TAKEN MISS CORAL E. PICKENS DIES AT THRESHHOLD OF LIFE OF ENCOURAGEMENT, HOPE AND PROMISE. Leaves Large Circle of Associates and Close Friends, Close Companion of Her Mother Who Has Sympathy of All. Beautiful Funeral Service Obituary. Coral E. Pickens only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Pickens was born October 17, 1889 in the township of Odessa and died June 17, 1907 at her home in Woodland. When only six years old her own father died and she and her younger brother Orvin were their mother’s seemingly only comfort. She early began her school life in the district school and making good progress there she entered the Lake Odessa High School in September 1905. Her work here has been of the best and she never failed to win the love of her teachers and one of her deep regrets during her recent sickness was that she would fall behind her classmates in her studies. She joined the Methodist church when but a young girl about ten years of age and lived a most devoted and Christlike life until her Savior called her home. In Sunday School she was a member of a class of twenty young ladies and she was always found prepared on the lessons. Last winter she took the measles and pneumonia set in and for weeks her life was dispared of but she recovered sufficiently to attend school a little this spring. Last week Thursday she was taken sick again and although all was done that man wish being that she might know that she was going a few minutes before that the time was at hand, and that her mother and friends might be comforted after her departure. She calmly talked of death as simply going to be at home with Jesus and her papa and seemed to have a vision of the eternal before the spirit fled. She selected three songs to be sung at her funeral leaving one for Russel, her friend, to select, and the text she requested her mother to select. After a prayer and the son, “We’ll Never Say Good By in Heaven” at the home of the funeral service was held at the Methodist church. The procession was headed by ten classmates of her Sunday School followed by the pall bearers Byron Hershiser, Bert Shepard, Howard Klahn, Frank Niethamer, Jasper Jordan and Stanley Dann, all school-mates of the deceased. Rev. Cook gave a most excellent address on the text, “Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints” and the songs “Beautiful Isle of Somewhere,” “Gathering One by One” and “Down Through the Valley” were sung by a ladies quartette consisting of Mrs. G. Braden, Mrs. R. Colwell, Mrs. A. Dann and Mrs. L. Otis with Mrs. George Carpenter at the organ. Interment was made to Lakeside cemetery by the side of the deceased’s father. Those bereft have the sympathy of a large circle of friends who feel that words are inadequate at such time.
