The Portland Observer, Wednesday, November 5, 1890
Ellen, beloved wife of James Pierce, died at her home in Orange on the 29th, 
of spinal fever, aged 39 years.  Besides the bereaved husband, the deceased 
leaves two children and a host of relatives and friends to mourn her loss.  
The funeral services were conducted at the late home of the deceased on 
Saturday last, Rev. Bready of the Methodist church conducting the services, 
the remains being interred in the cemetery in this place.  Mrs. Pierce was a 
sister of Watson Merchant, and was held in high esteem by all who know her, 
and the family have the sympathies of the entire community in their affliction.
