He was born in Granard, Longford county, Ireland, April 8, 1816. He came to America in 1837, landing in New York, August fourth of that year. The same year he came west to Painesville, Geauga county, Ohio. The next year he came to Plymouth, Mich., where he was married Sept. 23, 1842, to Henrietta Bradley. After a residence of two years at Plymouth, he came to Sebewa, in this county, in 1842, and thence, with his family, to Portland in the spring of 1844, and has resided here until his death, Sept. 30, 1900. His mother, in the old country, was a member of the M.E. church, and at the age of 13 years the deceased was converted to the faith of his mother. While he resided in Ohio he united with the M.E. church, but when he came to Michigan he identified himself with the Congregational church and was a consistent member of the Portland church of that denomination at its organization in February, 1843. He subsequently left that church and for many years has been a consistent member of the Portland M.E. church. He was a man of somewhat peculiar ideas and held tenaciously to his principles which he always believed to be right. His piety was never questioned. He was a strict observer of the Sabbath and loved the services of the church, which he always attended when able. Though quite infirm he was able to be in the village on Friday, but returning to his home in the outskirts of the village, he began to fall and on Sunday morning passed away. His wife preceded him several years ago. Stephen Pilkinton, a resident of Portland and Ionia county since 1844, died Sunday at the age of 84 years.
