Judson Warner and Fred were visiting together and one of them took down an army musket, supposing it to be unloaded, which, alas, is too often the supposition but not the fact. One of them even tested it by blowing into the barrel at the muzzle and was positive that the gun was not loaded. It is the same old story repeated. Playfully young Warner leveled it at Young Pinckney’s head and asked him if he should shoot. “Fire away!” replied Pinckney and Warner pulled the trigger and young Pinckney was instantly killed. The terrible mistake was discovered too late. Nearly the whole charge of shot lodged in the boy’s face, and he died in the chair he was sitting in. Fred and Judson have always been the warmest of friends, and Judson, who has now accidentally taken the life of his much loved companion, once at the risk of his own life saved him from drowning; taking him from the water just as he was about to sink for the third time.
