H. Pinkney was born on a farm in Keene township, Ionia county, on March the 31st, 1846, and departed this life from his home in Saranac on Tuesday evening, April 16th, at the age of 72 years and 16 days. Mr. Pinkney lived a life of varied experiences and has tasted many of its sorrows. He has known the terror of war, having enlisted in the army at Boston, belonging to Company H of the 27th infantry. For two years and seven months he fought for the freedom of humanity and suffered with his fellows. On July 26th, 1865, he was mustered out and returned to his home in Keene. He has always remained a member of the Grand Army of the Republic. In the year 1866, Jan. 1st, he was united in marriage to Miss Phoebe Hubbell and they made their home on a farm in Keene. This union was blessed with three daughters, Viola, Almeda and Elizabeth, and one son, Ira. Sorrow visited the home in the year 1880, Oct. 23, and robbed them of a wife and mother. The vacant place in this home was filled in 1881 by his marriage to Eveline Holdridge. To this union were born five boys, Fred, Earl, Fay, Truly and Dewey. In addition to these there were two step-children, Anna Holdridge and Chauncey Holdridge. Six years ago Mr. Pinkney moved into Saranac where he remained until the day of his decease. For the same period of time he has suffered from a cancer which eventually caused his death. Among the immediate relatives who mourn the loss are the wife, Eveline Pinkney; a sister, Caroline Janette, Grand Rapids; two daughters, Viola Condon of Vergennes township in Kent county; Elizabeth Carr of Keene township; five sons, Fred of Holt township, Mason County; Earl, of Saranac; Fay, of Grand Rapids; Truly, of Lansing; Dewey, of Campbell township; one step-daughter, Anna.
