He was born May 30, 1924 in Shaftsburg, Michigan, to Sidney and Vevia (Salyer) Pinkston. Duaine married June Johnson on Jan. 19, 1947, in Ionia. Together, they spent 68 wonderful years, enjoying life by raising a family on their farm in Portland, traveling to Army reunions, wintering in Florida, and especially spending time with family. Duaine was a proud World War II combat medic and paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne, 505th Regiment who jumped at Normandy on D-Day. He was the proud recipient of the Legion of Honor medal from France for his service in liberating the country during World War II. One of Duaine’s favorite things to do was share war stories with his family, friends and Army brothers. Retiring from General Motors after 30 years, Duaine continued to farm. He was a long-standing member of LeValley United Methodist Church where he taught Sunday School. Duaine had a zest for life and never met a person he could not talk to or share a laugh with. He loved big band music and each day was greeted with a song in his heart, optimism, enthusiasm and a big smile. Duaine is survived by his loving wife, June, of Portland; children, Craig (Kathy) Pinkston of Portland, Karen (Brian) Bedaine of Eagle, and Brian (Sue) Pinkston of Portland; seven grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; and brother, Shelby Pinkston, of Lake Odessa. He was preceded in death by his parents; stepfather, Geo; sisters, Thelma, Ruth, Genevieve, Nola and Star Ann; brothers, Sidney and Bruce; and one great-grandchild, Wyatt. Visitation was held at Lake Funeral Home in Ionia on Monday, Nov. 23, from 4-7 p.m. Funeral Services will be held at LeValley United Methodist Church in Ionia on Tuesday, Nov. 24, at 11 a.m. with Pastor Ray Sundell officiating. Interment Tuttle Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to LeValley United Methodist Church or to an organization of one’s choice.
