Piper, 92, Kent county pioneer, and one of the few women who have braved the dangers of the gold trail to California in a covered wagon in 1849, is dead at the home of her brother, E.B. Lapham, in Belding. Mrs. Piper was the daughter of Smith Lapham of Rockford and taught the first school in that village 75 years ago. The school building was built of slabs cut at her father’s mill at Rockford, then known as Laphamville.
