Piper, 56, of Jackson, Tenn. died unexpectedly March 18, 1997 in Tennessee. He was born April 28, 1940 in Montcalm County, the son of Marshall and Sarah (Jenks) Piper. He graduated from Ionia High School in 1958 and went on to graduate from Purdue University. He was a 20-year veteran with the U.S. Navy, retiring as Commander. He served eight tours of duty in the Vietnam War. He is survived by one daughter, Lynda (Gary) Walters of Tenn.; one son Phillip (Becky) Piper of Mississippi; three grandsons, Jared Walters, Aaron Walters and Jordan Piper; his mother, Sarah Piper of Ionia; five sisters, Joan (Chuck) Howorth of Ionia, Patsy (Leo) Fisher of Ionia, Leona (Gordon) Nobis of Muir, Debbie (Brice) Hesche of Dearpark, Tex. and Diane (Mike) Bradley of Lexington, Kentucky; ex-wife, Judy Piper of Jackson, Tenn.; sister-in-law, Vivki (Dan) Collins of Tennessee; close friend, Cecile Rolison of Jackson, Tenn. He was preceded in death by his father and two brothers, Gary and Edward. Cremation has taken place with a family graveside service planned at Evergreen Cemetery in Sheridan.
