Pipes was born on October 7, 1931 in Savannah, Tennessee (raised in Tyronza, Arkansas) passed away on February 15, 2008 at his brother Virgil's residence in Portland. James was a veteran of the United States Army, he fought bravely during the Korean Conflict for 3 years participating in three different campaigns. He later came to Michigan to work for Fisher Body and married and moved to Portland. He was preceded in death by his loving parents Claude Clarence and Elvie Jane (Hall) Pipes, brothers Frank and R.L. Pipes and a son Jonathan "J.J." Pipes on February 12, 2006. He is survived by his siblings Gladys, Johnny, Virgil, Billy and Butch; also left behind are his children Lisa and James; several grandchildren and one great grandson; Jim is also survived by his wife, Joan of Kalamazoo and many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 19, 2008 at the Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, Portland. Private military services and interment will be at Ft. Custer National Cemetery, Augusta, MI. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society in memory of "Trigger". A memorial dinner will held from 5-8 p.m., Tuesday at the V.F.W. Post #4646 in Lyons on Bridge St., Lyons where all are welcome to come and share their stories and pictures in memory of Jim. Lisa would like to thank Ionia Area Hospice especially Janet, Susan, Donna and Ann and also to a few special ladies who helped out at home for my father during his great time of need a special thank you to Danica, Karen, Jennifer, Alysa and Joyce and to all those who pitched in whenever and however they could. Your devotion meant so much to Jim’s daughter and she loves and respects you all so much more for your compassion during this most difficult item. God Bless.
