Oct. 26, 1960 REV. A. J. PITMAN DIES ON OCTOBER 25 Rev. Albert J. Pitman, 76, pastor of the Lake Odessa Congregational church died Tuesday, October 25, at 7:45 at Pennock hospital, after being hospitalized for five weeks following a stroke of paralysis. He was born July 15, 1884, in Greenspond, Bonivista Bay New Foundland, son of William and Jessie Pitman. He started his ministry when he began his teaching career in the church school in New Foundland at the age of 16 and came to the United States when twenty years old. His first pastorate was a small methodist church at Russell, North Dakota, which under his pastorate, was built up and a new church built. He then served at Warwick, North Dakota, where he met his wife, the former Ethel Richardson and were married there November 6, 1907. He served Methodist churches at Tolley and Stockweather, North Dakota; Rosencrans, moline, rutland and Thawville, Illinois. while at Thawville, Rev. Pitman received a call from the Granville, Illinois, Congregational church which he accepted, later serving in Boston with the Seaman friend and church there for two years and then returned to Illinois and accepted the pastorate at downers Grove where he served for 17 1/2 years, retiring because of ill health. After he improved from is heart condition, he came to Lake Odessa in 1949 when he accepted the pastorate at the local church where he has since served. Rev. Pitman was very active in all community and civic affairs and worked with the Red Cross, CROP and other activities. He was chairman of them Ministerial association of the local churches and served as registrar of the Grand Rapids Association of Congregational churches for several years. Surviving are his wife, Ethel; one daughter, Mrs. Raymond (Mary) Kolenda of Grand Rapids; one son, Lt (jg) Richard Pitman of Jacksonville, Florida; six grandchildren; five sisters, Mrs. James Smith of Sacksville, New Brunswick, Canada, Mrs. Constance Penwick, Canada, Mrs. Constance Pendelburg of New Hampton, Conn., Mrs. Pierce Wicks of Milwaukee, Wis., Mrs. John Goodyear of Carmenville, New Foundland and Mrs. Wilfred flack of Colinton, Alberta, Canada. Funeral services will be held Friday, October 28, at 2 p.m. at Pickens funeral Chapel with burial in lakeside Cemetery.
