May 12, 2016 JAMES C. PITTMAN 1943-2016 James C. Pittman, age 73 of Saranac, passed away on May 9, 2016 in Grand Rapids. James was born on Jan. 17, 1943 in Detroit,Michigan to James and Amy (Cohoon) Pittman. Jim was a graduate of Hazel Park high School. He entered the Army in 1967, serving with the 199th light infantry brigade "Red Catchers" during the Vietnam War where he was injured on the Dong Nia river. He received the Purple Heart, Sharp Shooter and Silver Star awards. He was a member of the American legion in Saranac and Belding, VFW in Ionia and Belding, Elks in Ionia, Moose in Ionia and Military order of the cootie. He was interviewed for and written about in the novel "Day's of Valor." Jim is survived byh his son, james H. Pttiman of Saranac, Michiga; two brothers, richard Pittman of Farmington hills, Michgian, Charles (Sandy) morgan of Livonia, Michian; two sisters, Betty (Bliss) Page of farmington Hills, Michigan, and elizabeth Nurola of Wayne michigan, several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. Jim impacted anyone he ever met. He will always be loved and sadly missed by his family. He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Gary Pittman. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, May 13, at lake funeral Home in Ionia with Pastor Jeff Kahl officiating family will be accepting visitors on Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home. Full Military Funeral honors to be held at the Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. Those wishing may make memorial contributions to the Saranac American Legion.
