July 24, 1947 Howard D. Poff, widely known Lake Odessa automobile and farm implement dealer, died unexpectedly from a heart attack at his home on south Fifth Avenue here about 6 O'clock Sunday morning. He was 48 years old. Mr. Poff took and active interest in civic affairs of the village. He had served on the village council, had been president of the Lake Odessa Civics and Agricultural-Improvement Association, was a member of the local Masonic order, and of the Lions Club, having been its president in 1943. He also was a member of the National Trotting association and owned three trotting horses. Mr. Poff was born at Eckford on January 21, 1899, and came with his parents to Lake Odessa in 1915. In 1925 he opened an auto tire sales and repair business here later including the selling of automobiles and about 12 or 14 years ago he added a line of farm implements. On October 26, 1926, he was married to Miss Mabel Armour who survives him. Also surviving are four daughters, Mary, a student at Michigan State college; Virginia, Sylvia and Margaret at home; three sisters, Mrs. Hazel Middling and Mrs. Helen Rainbow, both o Battle Creek, and Mrs. Rosetta Beck in Lansing. Funeral services were held at the Pickens funeral chapel Tuesday afternoon. The Rev. Leon W. Manning of Hastings officiating. Burial was on Lakeside Cemetery. Honorary bearers were Royal C. Johnson, Walter Peacock, Frank Johnson, Allison Tolles, Harry Malcolm and William Caswell. Acting bearers were Reuben B. Cook, William C. McCartney, Walter A. Reed, Sr., Orven B. Garlinger, Ermal G. Garlinger and George F. Reister.
