Catherine Ann Schafer was born Aug. 8, 1918, in Iona, the daughter of Leonard and Agnes (Humphreys) Schafer. She grew up in Ionia and graduated from SS. Peter and Paul School in 1936. She was married Nov. 8, 1941 at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Ionia to James J. Poole and he preceded her in death Oct. 20, 1982. Katie was a member of the Daughters of Isabella, the Knights of Columbus Auxiliary and SS. Peter and Paul School Alumni. She liked reading, swimming, cooking and the Detroit Tigers. She loved her grandchildren and enjoyed being Mom and Grandma. Katie is survived by her five children, Ann Bales of Ionia, Carolee (Jeff) Macfarlane of Boyne City, James (Barbara) Poole Jr. of Kentwood, Gail (Dan) Lower of Ionia and Rick Poole of Ionia; 15 grandchildren, Scott Bischoff, Michelle Bischoff, Greg Usher, Becca Usher, Bill Roosien, Allison Roosien, Bart Lower, Kelly Lower, Danielle Lower, Katie Lower, James Poole III, Evan Poole, Lesley Poole, Sarah Poole and Stacy Macfarlane; six brothers and sisters, Luella Boyd of Orleans, Red (Mac) McKenna of Florida, Dick (Trudy) Schafer of Ionia, Bob (Arleen) Schafer of Ionia, Pete (Mary) Schafer of Ionia and Mary Edwards of Saranac and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death, in addition to her husband, James, one sister, Ruth Bauermeister. Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 a.m., Friday from SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Ionia with Fr. Melvin Fox presiding. Interment will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Visiting hours will be held from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday and 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Thursday with Rosary being recited at 8 p.m. from Cook Funeral Home, Rich Street Chapel, Ionia. Memorial contributions may be made to SS. Peter and Paul Education fund or the Leukemia-Lymphoma Association. Envelopes are available at the funeral home and the church.
