Poole, who for 44 years was one of the leading figures in this city in social, religious and commercial activities. Funeral services were held from the church of SS. Peter & Paul on Monday morning, a Requiem High Mass being celebrated in loving remembrance of Mr. Poole who had been a lifelong communicant of the Catholic faith. The pastor, Rev. Fr. John Maier, assisted by Rev. Fr. Dorr, of Belding, officiated at the Mass, while Rev. Fr. Hugh D. McCarthy came back from Detroit to deliver the funeral eulogy over his old friend and loyal co-worker during all of the years he was pastor of the local church. It was a touching tribute of friendship and moved those who filled the church with many emotional thoughts. Interment was made in Mt. Olivet cemetery. The pall bearers were: E. F. Gallagher, Anthony Scully, Alex McAlary, Frank Frost, Robt. Banhagel and William G. Longe. Mr. Poole was born in the town of Prescott, in the county of Lancashire, England, October 1, 1853. In November 22, 1881 he was married to Miss Mary Earley, and in the year 1883 he moved his family to America, coming to Ionia at that time, and has since been a resident here. He is survived by Mrs. Poole and four children—Joseph, of Chicago; Mrs. Harry H. McGowan, of Ionia; James, of Midland, and Edward, at home. One daughter, Gertrude, died in 1889. He is also survived by two sisters who reside in England. For years he was identified with the Pere Marquette shops here, serving many years there in the capacity of carpenter foreman until he resigned to take up the duties of city clerk, to which he was elected in 1921, serving in that position for three years. Following his resignation as a city official. Mr. Poole was employed for some time in the office of the T. A. Carten store and when this firm was reorganized over a year ago he continued in the same capacity with the new store until it was discontinued a few months ago. Mr. Poole received his early education in England and spent a number of years at St. Edward’s seminary in Liverpool. He was a charter member of Ionia council 944, Knights of Columbus, serving this organization as its grand knight for three years. He was also a member of the Holy name society.
