Though her will to live and her fighting spirit lived on, she joined her husband Edward the day before Memorial Day; while he died the day after Christmas, 1991. The following is Carol's obituary, written by her own hand, at the age of 90, with nearly no editing. It was given with the words. You won't need this for a few years, but at least you'll have it when you need it. Carol Louise Popp was born in Amber Township of Mason County to Charles and Agusta (Arndt) Conrad on Aug. 17, 1918. She grew up on a farm, helping her dad with driving the horses during hay season. She attended North Amber School and later worked for a family so she could attend Ludington High School, graduating in 1936. After graduation, she was employed for over a decade at the National Bank of Ludington while caring for her parents. She also was active in the Glee Club, marching in parades and traveling to cities to entertain veterans. She also volunteered as a Grey Lady, performing nursing duties for wounded soldiers returning from the war. On June 21, 1952 she married Edward Popp, son of the late Edward and Helen (Wurstrow) Popp of Pittsfield, Mass. Together they managed the Plaza Hotel for more than 35 years, many of those years working side by side with her husband in the license bureau. Carol was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Gleaner Life Society, the Royal Neighbors and the Cassie Stewart Circle. Carol is survived by her three daughters, Ellen, Phyllis and Marian and grandson, Jeremiah. Carol loved her Shelties, especially her darling puppy Majella, given by Marian as an 89th birthday present for surviving hip surgery. (She is named after the wife of her favorite artist, Daniel O'Donnell.) Carol leaves behind three daughters, Ellen White of Portland, Phyllis (Ray) Popp of Tempe, Ariz. and her full-time caregiver, Marian Popp of Ionia and one grandson, Jeremiah White of South Bend, Ind. She continued to share a close relationship with her relatives in Ludington and Manistee up until her untimely death. She is preceded in death by her devoted husband of 40 years, Edward; sisters Neva Smith and Blanche Keith, who lived into their late nineties, and her brother Eldred Conrad. Her non-spiritual remains were entrusted to Brown-Teman & Christiansen Funeral Home of Greenville, where her body will assist MedCure of Portland, Ore. in finding treatments and healing for the living. (MedCure's research with implants to stabilize fractured spines, orthopedic reconstructions and for venous conditions were all concerns dear to Carol's life.) Carol's ashes will be divided to lay next to her husband at Balcolm Cemetery, Ionia, as well as placed with her family of origin at Lakeview Cemetery, Ludington. Memorials may be given in Carol's honor to the First United Methodist Church (Ionia or Ludington), where she was a lifetime member. They may also be given to Homes for Our Troops (homesforourtroops.com) which helps military service members by adapting their homes to accommodate their disabilities.
