He Died Monday Morning After Suffering Long-A Once Prominent Person

Geo.W.Porter died at his home in this village last Monday morning of a 
scrofulous disease with which he had been afflicted for some years, in the 52d 
year of his age.

George Wellington Porter was born December 26th, 1840, in the town of Barre, 
Orleans county, NY., and lived there as a farmer for 35 years.He was married to 
Ann Stevenson (a sister of Alfred and Elby Stevenson of this village) January 
1st, 1862, and she and one son, Wellington, survive him. Deceased came to 
Portland in 1865, and has resided here ever since.

He was a carpenter by trade, but soon after coming here engaged in the grocery 
business with F.N. Newman in the building now occupied by John Bauer.After that 
he engaged in various kinds of business-weather-strip making, brick-making, etc. 
Twelve years ago he was elected justice of the Peace, which office he still 
held, his term being out next July. In 1884 he ran for Register of deed of Ionia 
county on the Republican ticket, but was defeated by a small plurality. He was 
also at one time president of the village.

George Porter was a straightforward, honest man in all his dealing with his 
fellowmen, and the world wouldn't be very bad if there were no worse men in it 
than he.

The funeral service will be conducted from the Universalist Church this 
(Wednesday) forenoon at 10:30 o'clock, the Rev. Goodell officiating.The burial 
will be under the auspices of the Masonic fraternity of which he had been a 
member, having at one time been master of the lodge. The A.O.U.W. Lodge of 
Portland will also attend.
