Area Indications Are That He May Have Been In Marshall Invasion Mr. and Mrs. John Powell, 710 W. Washington street, received a wire Thursday noon from Lieut. General Vandergrift of the United States Marines, advising them of the death of their son, Corporal John P. Powell. The telegram said in part: “Deeply regret to inform you that your son, Corp. John Powell, was killed in action in the performance of duty for his country. Letter will follow.” Corp. Powell, serving with the U.S. Marines in the South Pacific area, left the United States soon after January 10. He telephoned his parents from Camp Pendleton, Oceanside, Calif., January 7 and on January 10 wrote them from the same address. This was the last letter they received from him. Corp. Powell enlisted in the U.S. Marines November 1, 1940, and was among the first Ionia young men to enter the Marines. He was sent to Parris Island, then to Quantico, Va. From there he was transferred to Naval Supply Depot at Bayonne, New Jersey where he remained for 20 months. On completion of his service on the east coast he was transferred to Camp Pendleton, Calif. Obituary John Palmer Powell was born in Ionia, February 26, 1922. He attended SS Peter and Paul Academy, was graduated from there with the class of 1940 and entered the U.S. Marines in November of that year. He was married on February 14, 1942, to Miss Jane Kosky, of Bayonne, N.J., who with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Powell, two sisters and four brothers, survive him. The sisters are Mrs. Ronald Guidi, Portland, Mich., Kathryn Ann, Ionia; the brothers are Seaman First Class, William, Jr., with the U.S. Navy, Louis of Detroit and Fred of Ionia. Word was received here this week from Seaman William that he had arrived safely at an undisclosed overseas destination. Corporal Powell is also survived by his paternal grandmother, Mrs. Julia Powell of Ionia. ------------ A full military funeral will be conducted from SS. Peter and Paul church at 9 o’clock Tuesday morning for Cpl. John Powell whose casketed remain were returned to his hometown of Ionia Saturday afternoon. Escorted by a guard of honor and the city police, the body was taken to the Bradley funeral home where a prayer service will be held Tuesday morning at 8:15 preceding the church services. Mayor and Mrs. Fred Barnes as well as a host of friends met the train bearing the casket and the marine escort, M. Sgt. Mayers. Interment will be in Mt. Olivet cemetery. Friends are invited to say the Rosary at the funeral home at 7:30 Monday evening.
