He had been in ill health for some time. He was born in Poland, March 6, 1854, and migrated to the United States when he was but 26 years of age. He spent the remainder of his life in Ionia in the same house in which he died. His first employment in Ionia was with George W. Webber at the Ionia Gas company. He later was employed by the Pere Marquette and he was with them for a period of 43 years before he retired from active work. As hobbies Mr. Powell was interested in carpenter work and shoe cobbling. Surviving are the widow, Julia Powell, and nine children, Mrs. Frank Grescoviak of Ionia, Mrs. Anthony Funk of Grand Rapids, Mrs. C.G. Makowski of Grand Rapids, Sister Mary, a teacher in Redford, Sister D. Wanetta, a teacher in Detroit, Joseph, Walter, William, all of Ionia, and Adam, of Flint, 23 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Mr. Powell is the first member of these four generations to die. Funeral services will be held from the SS. Peter and Paul church Tuesday morning at 9 o’clock. Rev. Fr. Thomas O. Martin will officiate. Interment will be in Mt. Olivet cemetery. The Holy Name society will meet at the home Monday evening at 7:30 o’clock to recite the rosary.
