Powell, 47, wife of J. Nelson Powell, was found dead in the kitchen of her home at 221 Rich street Sunday morning. Gas jets on a range were found turned on. She was discovered by her husband at 12:30 a.m. as he returned home from work at the Michigan reformatory where he is employed as guard. Mrs. Powell was born April 4, 1888, and was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Gould, of Ionia. She attended and was graduated from the Ionia high school in 1906. That same year she married J. Nelson Powell and has since lived in Ionia. Her interest were greatly centered around her home and church life. She was an active enthusiast in civic and educational matters. She was a member of the Ionia Methodist Episcopal church, having held several offices in the ladies’ aid society, a member of Queen Esther chapter No. 34 Order of Eastern Star and a member of the Smantha Wright past matrons association. She also belonged to the WLC of Ionia. Surviving besides her husband is one son, Maurice, at home, a daughter, Hollis, teacher at Wyandotte, and one brother, Zane Gould, of Jackson. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the residence at 221 Rich street with Rev. Mathew W. Duffey officiating. The past matrons of the OES will have charge of the service at Highland Park cemetery.
