Powell passed away Friday night, July 18, 1919 at her home in this village after having been in failing health for some time, aged 62 years, six months and nineteen days. Sarah Q. was the second daughter of James and Jane Sheldon Small and was born in Ontario, Canada, December 19, 1856. The family came to Michigan when she was a child and settled in Lapeer county. She was baptized at Elm Hall by a minister of the United Brethren church and later united with the Baptist church by letter. She was united in marriage to Horace H. Powell of Ronald, Ionia County, August 19, 1882, and came to Carson City March 4, 1886, and has resided here since. Five daughters, Mildred, Mary, Ruth, Doris and Margaret were born and have grown to womanhood. She was a devoted mother and lover of home and maintained the closest of relationship as a friend and companion of her children so that mother was all in all to them. Mrs. Powell has been a member of the Carson City Daughter of Rebekah and an active worker for many years until failing health compelled her to drop social activities. She is survived by her mother, now in her 91st year, her husband, and their five daughters, Mrs. Reuben J. Kurtz of Fenton, Mrs. Jesse S. Walker, Mrs. Ira J. Garlock, Miss Doris Powell and Mrs. Ralph Burt, six grandchildren, also four brothers, George W. Irving of Adrian, Wallace Irving of St. Johns, Ellsworth Small of Rosebush, Robert Small of California, and four sisters, Mrs. Wm. Bird of St. Johns, Mrs. John Mogg, Saskatchewan, Canada, Mrs. Jos. Bloom of Rosebush and Mrs. Amanda Hill of Traverse City. The funeral services were held at the house Sunday afternoon, Rev. C. S. Burchfield officiating. The remains were laid to rest in the Carson City cemetery.
