Powell Meets Death As Result of Accident. The community was shocked last Friday evening when it was learned that Horace H. Powell had been struck by a truck and was supposed to be fatally injured. The accident happened about 6:30 o’clock near the Louis Coleman residence on West Main St. Mr. Powell was returning home from the west and was driving a horse hitched to a road cart. Merle Bussell was also driving his truck towards the east and was accompanied by Ernest Phinney. The truck is a large five-ton one and was loaded with lumber which he was bringing here for the Carson City Elevator Co. Mr. Bussell did not see Mr. Powell until just the instant before he was struck, the street electric light having affected his vision. Mr. Powell was thrown with great force against the windshield of the truck, a great hole being broken in the shatter proof glass. The horse was so badly injured that it was shot. Mr. Powell was carried to the home of J. C. Urie and then soon taken to his home. Dr. O. P. Geib was summoned and gave him medical attention. Mr. Powell’s injuries consisted of severe head injuries and cuts, his right arm and shoulder being fractured and also some ribs. He passed away about 10:00 p.m. Deputy Sheriff Clyde W. Davenport was called to investigate the accident, but as Mr. Powell was driving without any light it was apparent that the accident was unavoidable. Horace Hulbert Powell, second son and fifth child of Joseph Priestly and Ruth Ann Goodwin Powell, was born March 24, 1859, in Ronald township, Ionia county, Michigan, where his parents were among the earliest pioneer settlers. After attending school in Ionia, he engaged in various occupations before taking up the business of farming, which has been his chief interest since March, 1887, when he settled in Bloomer township, Montcalm county. On August 19, 1882, he married Sarah Small, who passed away July 18, 1919. There survive five daughters, Mrs. Reuben J. Kurtz of Holly, Mich., Mrs. Ira J. Garlock of Carson City, with whom the deceased made his home, Mrs. Murray J. Rice of Alfred, N.Y., and Mrs. W. Dayle Biddle of Ypsilanti; nine grandsons and three granddaughters; also one sister, Mrs. Ella M. Barnes of Middleville, and two brothers, Rev. Herman J. Powell of Santa Ana, California, and Herbert E. Powell, former Michigan Commissioner of Agriculture of Ionia. Funeral services were held at the Garlock home Monday, Nov. 27, at two p.m. with Rev. Thos. W. H. Marshall as the officiating minister. He took for his text, “If a man died shall he live again?” Interment was made in the Carson City cemetery.
