Rapids Herald - Wednesday, Oct. 27, 1954 IONIA- Former Commissioner of Agriculture and State Legislator, Herbert E. Powell, died at his home in Ionia at the age of 86. The funeral will be Friday at the First Baptist Church in Ionia at 2:30 p.m. He had been a member of the church for 71 years. Mr. Powell was appointed agricultural commissioner by former Governor Fred W. Green and served under Gov. Wilbur Brucker who followed him in that position. From 1913 to 1916 he had been state senator for Ionia-Montcalm district then followed with two terms, 1901-1904 in the House of Representatives. Mr. Powell served from 1908-1909 as state's constitutional convention. Mr. Powell, was the grandson of pioneer settler that resided in Ronald Twp. His parents being, Joseph P. and Ruth Goodwin Powell. Mr. Powell established and operated the Ingleside Farm than moved to Ionia shortly after his retirement from in 1947. In 1888 he was married to Alice May Watebury, who preceded him in death in 1947. His survivors include his son, Stanley M. Powell, Legislative representative of the Michigan Farm Bureau. Stanley resumed operation of Ingleside after the death of his father. and also filled the now vacant post of Ionia County representative, created by the loss of his father. Another son, Ralph W. Powell, of Columbus, Ohio and a daughter, Mrs. Earle Harrison, of East Lansing, survive him. ____________________________________ Herbert E. Powell - October 26, 1954 Herbert E. Powell, 88, prominent one-time Republican state legislator, died Tuesday at his home here. Powell was state representative from Ionia county from 1901-1904. He was a member of the state constitutional convention which framed the state 1909 Michigan constitution. Former Senator Powell represented Ionia and Montcalm counties as state senator from 1913-1916. From 1927-1932 he served as state commissioner of agriculture under Govs. Fred W. Green and Wilber M. Bruker. A lifelong resident of Ionia county, Powell was a farmer and stock-raiser until his retirement. He is survived by two sons, Ralph of Columbus, Ohio and Stanley, of Ionia, and a daughter, Mrs. Earle Harrison of Lansing. Stanley Powell is the Michigan Farm Bureau legislative representative and member of the state fair board. Funeral services will be at 2:30 Friday at the Ionia Baptist church.
