Ionia County News - Thursday, March 22, 1962

Joseph S. Powell, 67, died Friday evening, March 16, at the Ionia County 
Memorial hospital, after being ill for a short time. He was a lifelong resident 
of Ionia.

He was born in Ionia on May 27, 1894, to Joseph and Julia Whitelock Powell. He 
married Esther Lystrup in 1923. He had lived at 609 Hackett St. for the past 21 
years.

Mr. Powell retired from the Michigan Reformatory after 32 years of service in 
November, 1960. He was a member of SS. Peter and Paul church and former member 
of BPOE 548.

Surviving are his wife, Esther of Ionia; one brother, Adam Powell of Flint; fie 
sisters, Mrs. Frank Grescoviak of Ionia, Mrs. Mary Funk and Mrs. Gust Makowski 
of Grand Rapids, Sister Mary Walter of Mt. Morris and Sister Mary Leonita of 
Jackson. 

Funeral services were at SS. Peter and Paul church on Tuesday, March 20, at 
9:00 am. Interment was in Balcom cemetery.
