The most shocking and terrible accident that has occurred in this city in a 
long time caused the death of Ms. Nellie Powers last night.  Shortly after six 
o’clock she ran out of the house with her clothes all afire, screaming for 
help and writhing in the most terrible agony.  Her mother, Mrs. M. H. Moore, 
who lives across the street, together with Mrs. Holmes and other near 
neighbors ran to her assistance and endeavored to smother the flames with a 
rug and blanket, but not until nearly every garment was burned off her were 
their efforts successful.  The unfortunate woman was wrapped in a quilt and 
tenderly carried into the house.
Drs. Morris and Pinkham were called as quickly as possible and did all in 
their power to alleviate her awful sufferings, but the shock was so great that 
she died about 11 o’clock.  Mrs. Powers was conscious to within a half hour of 
her death and stated that she was getting supper over a gasoline stove when 
the back of her dress caught in the flame and soon enveloped her.
She, with her little daughter two years old, were down town in the afternoon 
and five minutes before the accident she was talking with her mother across 
the lawn who is in quarantine because of scarlet fever.  There was no one in 
the house except the little daughter, Mr. Powers being away at work.  He was 
notified of the accident and arrived home about nine o’clock and was 
distracted with grief when he saw her terrible condition.  Mrs. Powers is a 
sister of Daisy Moore.
The funeral is to be held at the house Friday at 10 o’clock am.  Rev. B. V. 
Child will conduct the service.
