Libbie, eldest daughter of Moses Powers, nine years of age, attempted to re-kindle the fire, during the absence of her mother and exploded the can, with a startling report, throwing the burning oil over the girl, who ran screaming from the house. Mrs. Huntley, a neighbor, attracted by the scream and realizing the situation, told her to roll on the grass, and at the same time ran to her with a blanket, in which she enveloped the girl's head. The child was fearfully burned over the entire surface of her body from her mouth to her ankles, not a vestige of clothing remaining upon her except her wristbands and shoes. Medical aid was at once summoned, and it was thought that her injuries would not prove fatal; but after lingering in great agony until two p.m. of the same day, her sufferings were ended by death. Another little girl in the same room at the time of the accident escaped, it would seem almost miraculously, uninjured. This is the second fatal accident of this kind in this village.
