Pratt, one of the oldest of the Ionia county pioneers, and one of the most active in the pioneer days, died on Monday afternoon at the home of his son in Easton Township. Deceased was born in the town of Newstead, Erie County, New York, on June 16, 1813. In early age he acquired a good common school education, and being of a mechanical turn, learned the trade of a millwright. In 1837 he came to Michigan and for three years worked at his trade in Oakland County. He then moved to the town of Lyons, Ionia Co., where he built the first mill within the present limits of the township. It was located on the banks of Libbart creek, and the building is the large red structure now located on South Dexter Street, in this city and recently purchased by Mr. Anderson for a marble works. Mr. Pratt resided in Lyons 26 years, and identified himself largely with development and material interests. In 1866 he moved to Saranac, and after a residence of seven years there, moved onto a farm in Keene. In 1839 Mr. Pratt was married to Miss Pluma Fox, who was born in Niagara Co., N. Y., in 1820 and came to Michigan in 1825. To them were born 8 children: Amanda, Walter E., Frank N., Lydia M., Dora C., Tenman J., Mary A., and George C. Both Mr. and Mrs. Pratt were prominent members of the Church of Christ, and were highly respected by all who knew them, for their real and stable worth.
