All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/mi/mifiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Marilyn Ransom mlnransom@chartermi.net July 14, 2010, 8:35 pm The Ionia Daily Standard, Wednesday, August 10, 1898 Elijah Pratt, one of the oldest and best known members of the Ionia County Pioneer society, died at his home in south Ionia township at 12:05 this morning, at the advanced age of 79 years and 8 months. He was born in Erie county, New York, on November 20, 1819. Mr. Pratt is descended from sturdy revolutionary stock. His father and mother were born in Massachusetts; they came to Michigan in 1839, locating in Oakland county; and in 1840 the family took up their residence in Saranac, where the parents died, Jacob Pratt in 1849 and the wife in 1852. Elijah Pratt was first married in 1842 to Celeste Stevens, who died December 29, 1865. Onto this union six children were born, three of whom are yet alive: Mrs. Mason W. Stoddard of Clinton county; Mrs. Charles Jones of Grand Rapids; Mrs. Levi Fellows of Ottawa county. His second marriage was with Helen A. Marble. This event took place February 23, 1867. Mrs. Pratt survives. Deceased was an honored member of the Masonic fraternity and as a citizen was time and again honored by election to positions of trust and responsibility. Sturdy and reliable, he was a good citizen in his lifetime. In his death a good man is surely gone to a good reward. The funeral will be attended from his late home at 9 o’clock on Thursday morning, and interment will be beside his parents in the family lot at Saranac, with Masonic ceremonies.
