P.B. Preston To Be Buried In Ionia

Phillips B. Preston, 65, former Ionia resident, who distinguished himself during
World War I died Wednesday afternoon in Lansing.  Since the end of World War I
he has been engaged in businesses in New York City, Detroit and Lansing.

Born October 18, 1894 in Ionia, he was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Thad B. Preston.
 Following his graduation from the Ionia high school in 1913 he attended the
University of Michigan until the outbreak of World War I.  He was a member of
the graduation class of 1917 but left his studies to attend officers training
school.  As soon as he was commissioned a second lieutenant he left immediately
for France with the second division.

His distinguished war record included participation in the battles of Belleau
Woods and Château Thierry.  He was also awarded the Croix de Guerre Medal by the
French government and received the Purple Heart for wounds received in action. 

After his discharge he returned to the University of Michigan and was graduated
from the literary school with an AB degree.  Being the son of an Ionia banker he
chose investment banking as a business career and went to New York.

He was married June 28, 1939 to Susan Birmingham of New York City.

In later years he engaged in the hotel business in Detroit and in 1947 came to
Lansing where he entered the manufacturing business.

Funeral service will be Saturday morning at 11 o’clock at Estes-Leadley funeral
home in Lansing.  The Rev. Court O. Adams, former pastor of the First Christian
church of Ionia, will officiate.  Graveside burial service will be in Ionia at
Highland Park cemetery at 1 o’clock Saturday afternoon.
