June 21, 1894 & Thursday July 5, 1894 Caroline E. Brooks was born in Watertown, Jefferson county, N.Y., Oct. 7, 1824. She came with her fathers family to Ionia county in the year 1848. They were for a time out nearest neighbors and the solemn words of the marriage service uniting two lives "for better for worse, is sickness and health, through evil and through good report, till death do us part," spoken under my fathers root, by the Rev. Overhiser. She was married to Benjamin H. Preston in 1846, and moved to Ionia, then a village. My early remembrance of her is very pleasant. She was attractive in appearance, quiet and kind in disposition, ever desirous of ministering to the happiness of others. Her home has been famed for many years for its hospitality, and her greeting was always cordial and affectionate. She exemplified as few can be said to, the injunction of the apostle to "use hospitality without grudging" and the sisters delegated at various times to solicit supplies always met with a generous response. She was a loving and indulgent mother, always staring the joys and sorrows of her children, and making their happiness oar trials her own. Sister Preston with her husband was converted under the preaching of the loved Isaac Errett. In 1857 and later on they became charter members of this church having remove their membership from Muir at the organization of this society 35 years ago. She obeyed strictly the injunction of Paul, "Let your women keep silence," but her hands were often busy like those of Dorcas making garments for the needy and so carrying comfort and cheer to those about her. For many years her failing health has kept her from the house of God and the assembly of the saints, and for nearly three years she has been literally a prisoner in her house of clay. Death came to hear as a friend, who was to transport her to the presence of the husband she so sorely missed and whose companionship she so much desired, his strong arm and tender care was removed more than two years ago, and she has been only waiting to join him in that land where parting never comes, the everlasting rapture to destroy. Mrs. Caroline E. Preston, widow of the late Benjamin H. Preston died June 13 at her home in the township of Ronald at the age of 70.
