A. Preston. ANOTHER HONORED PIONEER AND TRUE WOMAN __________________ Passes Quietly into the Unknown Realm Beyond the Confines of Earth. __________________ Mrs. Clark A. Preston passed quietly and peacefully away at 8 o'clock Sunday evening, a week from the time she was stricken. For a few days the friends clung to the slight hope offered by the physician that she might rally, but she became unconscious Thursday evening, and from that time it was evident that it was only a question of days or hours that would bring the inevitable end. Mrs. Preston could lay claim to being a genuine pioneer, having come to Ionia county in 1837 - a date to which not above three in the county can reach back in their residence. Mrs. Preston's maiden name was Mary A. Cunningham. She was born in Casnovia, Madison county, N.Y., In July 1834. Her father's name was Joseph Cunningham. Her mother died when the daughter was very young, and the little one was taken into the family of John DeLany, a cousin of her father. Mr. DeLany came to Ionia in 1836, and is well remembered by the older residents, the last years of his life being passed in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Preston . Seven children were born to Mr. and Ms. Preston, three of whom survive: Hassie, wife of H. G. Thornton; Thad B., manager of the Sorosis Garment company and vice-president of the State Savings bank and Miss Nina, librarian of the Hall- Fowler Memorial library. C. A. Preston has passed a life of marked activity in business and politics, in this community, a life that is interwoven with much history of the county in its early development. Mrs. Preston had the woman's place in this history, bearing her share of the burdens, and fulfilling her duties in all the various relations, with helpful courage, constancy and devotion that are the woman's part to the general history of life. She lived to taste the sweets of the fruit of early endeavor; her devotion to family found a proper reward in the quiet comfort and serenity of declining years. Mrs. Preston was a charter member of the Disciple church, organized in January 1859, and has been an active member during all the years, that included the prime of her life. She was also a member of the pioneer society, doing her part to keep alive the social attachments and memories of the early year. The marriage of Miss Cunningham to Mr. Preston took place Jan. 1, 1855, and the golden wedding anniversary was appropriately observed Jan. 1, 1905, when several hundred of our citizens called to pay their respects and partake of their delightfully hospitality. Outside of her immediate family she leaves no relatives except a half-sister, Mrs. Fannie Rae of York, Neb. Funeral services at Church of Christ, at 2 p.m., Wednesday.
