Proctor, better known at “Uncle George,” was born in East Avon, New York state, July 19, 1845, and departed this life May 9, 1932, being 86 years, 9 months and 20 days old. At the age of two years, his parents moved to Michigan and settling in the village of Lyons, Ionia County, Michigan, after which he purchased a farm in North Plains township, about five miles west of Hubbardston, making their home for a short time. He then sold and settled on the old home site where the father died in 1892 and the mother in 1907. Mr. Proctor has lived continuously on this farm for 79 years. During the early part of his life, he had many experiences which were very interesting to listen to. He was united in holy matrimony November 24, 1869, to Miss Lydia E. Canouts. To this union were born two children, Mrs. Chas. Sanford of North Shade, Gratiot County, and J. Bert Proctor of Crystal township, Montcalm County. Mrs. Sanford has made her life home with her father caring for him and assisting in his care from a severe operation that took place in 1922 and helping share the ups and downs of his life and which he bore so patiently and without murmur. About four years ago while seated in the family worship one morning he said; “Be seated, I have something to tell you. The Lord spoke to me one night not long ago (and it was not a dream), that if I would forsake my sins and take up my cross and follow Him that He would forgive me of all. It took him about 20 minutes to give his testimony. On August 22, 1931, he was buried in baptism with his Savior and it was a most beautiful ceremony to see an old man of 86 years, go down to his watery grave, a scene that will long be remembered by those who witnessed it. The funeral was held at the home on Thursday, May 12, Elder F. L. Abbott of Lansing and C. W. Pruitt of Alma officiating, with interment in East Side cemetery, Hubbardston. He leaves to mourn their loss, the son and daughter above named, two grandchildren, Mrs. Lydia Cusac of Flint and Loy Proctor, and one great grandchild besides a wide circle of friends and relatives.
