Proctor was born October 28, 1842 at Mesopotamia, Trumbull Co., Ohio. When a small boy he went from there to Conneaut, Ohio where he lived until the beginning of the civil war. In 1861 he enlisted in the 2nd Ohio Independent Light Artillery and served two years, when he was discharged on account of sickness. After his recovery he re-enlisted in the Navy and served on the battleship U.S. Grant till the close of the war. In 1865 he came to Michigan and was one of the pioneers of North Shade township, Gratiot county. On March 9, 1870 he was united in marriage to Anna M. Smith; to them were born four children—Alman R., who died two years ago; Dana B., who lives on the old place; Ethel M., living in Grand Rapids, and C. Victorine, a resident of Hubbardston. His wife died Nov. 5, 1892 and shortly after he moved to Hubbardston residing there until his death June 8, 1914. Mr. Proctor was a man of high character and pleasing disposition and was loved and respected by all who knew him. In addition to the children named above, the deceased is survived by a sister, Mrs. Candace Press of Conneaut, Ohio, and a brother, J. E. Proctor of Mulliken, Mich. The funeral services were held at the house June 10, Rev. H. V. Wade officiating, and Mrs. Chas. Ludwick and Mrs. Guy Locke singing appropriate selections. Interment was made in the Hubbardston cemetery.
